Many women desire breast enhancement whether it is due to loss of volume from having children or from the natural aging process. Breast augmentation may be performed using saline or silicone breast implants.  Both have their advantage. Dr. Steve Peterson also offers the post-op adjustable saline implant for those patients that may need additional adjustments due to their normal difference in size, or if they are unsure how large they want to be. A small dime size port goes under the skin and allows for adjustments for up to 6 months after surgery.  The port is then removed using a local anesthetic and the same incision. Breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is a procedure that is designed to increase your breast’s fullness and projection. This procedure can also be utilized to balance the symmetry between your breasts. The saline or silicone implant that will be used for this procedure will expand the breast area to give it a fuller size and improve its contour. A breast augmentation is not recommended for patients who are looking to correct and repair breasts that have drooped severely. If you are looking to improve your breast volume as well as reduce the appearance of sagging breasts, then a breast lift can be done in combination with a breast augmentation.

What are the types of implants available for breast augmentation?

Prior to your scheduled breast augmentation surgery, you and Dr. Peterson will decide which type of implant will be best to use depending on your preference and the results that you desire to achieve.

• Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. They are filled after insertion into the breasts to allow for any minor adjustments should there be a need for one.
• Silicone breast implants are pre-filled with an elastic silicone gel. Using this type of implant will require a longer incision to be made to insert and place the implant.

Breast implants can either be placed under the breast tissue or sub-glandular or under the chest muscle or sub-muscular. Dr. Peterson will discuss advantages or disadvantages of the different placements to help guide you in your decision process.

What is a breast augmentation procedure like?

A breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia and will take about 2 hours to complete. The incision can be made on different areas of the breast such as the breast fold, the edge of the areola, or in the area near the armpit. A pocket will be created and the implant will be inserted. Dr. Peterson will make adjustments in the implant placement to ensure that the perfect symmetry is achieved before closing the incisions. Recovery for a breast augmentation will take around 1 or 2 weeks and patients will be provided instructions on proper post-op care and wound healing to avoid any infection and other complications.
